Over the past decade, the digital culture of central and eastern Europe, long perceived as a poorer version of what was happening in the West, has built a brand that is respected around the world. Artists from Poland, Russia, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria today are creating huge hits, with global reach. What path did they take from difficult beginnings to tremendous success? To what degree do their common historical and economic conditions allow us to speak of the digital art of Europe’s east as a distinct phenomenon?
